Häagen-Dazs
Ice cream and shakes are the most unforgiving subjects in food photography. You're racing melt, condensation, and gravity all at once, and the frame still has to look effortless and indulgent. For this Häagen-Dazs shake series, the entire shoot was built around speed and preparation, as we shot all real ice cream.
Appetite appeal comes from texture. A shake has to look thick and cold: the swirl on top holding its peak, the frost forming naturally on the glass, the colour reading rich rather than washed out. We prepped multiple stand-ins so the hero could go in front of the lens at its absolute peak and come off before it started to slump. Lighting was shaped to bring out the surface texture and the beading condensation, which is what signals "cold and fresh" to the viewer instantly.
The brand equity of Häagen-Dazs is premium indulgence, so the styling leaned clean and confident, no distractions, just the product looking as good as it does in the first three seconds of a craving. Colour accuracy mattered enormously here; the shade of the shake is the flavour cue, and it had to be true.
Fast-melting subjects like this are where studio discipline pays off. Every second of setup you save on the day is a second the product still looks perfect on camera.
Planning a dairy, dessert, or shake campaign? This is the kind of high-tempo food and beverage work I love.
